Make Your Own Christmas Crochet Hat

Hello Everyone! Today’s blog brings you a Crochet Hat pattern that’s completely Christmas inspired. As you all know I live in Montana and it’s getting cold here. You may also know that I LOVE Christmas. I wanted a Crochet Hat that I could wear the entire month of December. I don’t always have time to do my hair so I wanted something festive that I could just throw on when I’m out running errands. I absolutely love the color variations that I chose for this cute Crochet Hat. It reminded me of candy cane stripes.

Here’s everything you will need for this Crochet Hat.

Yarn: Any #4 worsted weight yarn will do. I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Paddy Green, Soft White, and Cherry Red. One skein of each will suffice. I actually had extra left over from previous projects. <a href=”http://<a href=”https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1026079&u=3175406&m=72611&urllink=&afftrack=”>Lion Brand Yarn Lion Brand Yarns is also another fantastic alternative to Red Heart. If you can’t find these colors in the store you can purchase them through my affiliate links highlighted above.

Crochet Hook: US 6mm Crochet Hook. If you do not have a 6mm hook on hand, you can purchase one through my affiliate link highlighted above.

Yarn Needle: Any brand of yarn needle will do. I really like the metal ones. They seem to weave through the yarn much easier than plastic ones. You can purchase a multi pack of different sizes in the highlighted link.

Craft Scissors: Any type of scissors will work for this project. I love the smaller craft scissors because I can easily fit them in my crochet hook bag. You can purchase a pair in the highlighted link.

Pom Pom Maker: You do not have to use a pom pom maker. You can make the pom pom’s the old fashion way by winding the yarn around a piece of cardboard or around your hand. I love the pom pom makers because they create consistent and beautiful pom pom’s.

Now, Let’s Talk Abbreviations

Stitches you will need to know: CH (chain), HDC (half double crochet), HDC2TOG (half double crochet 2 stitches together), SLST (slip stitch), BLO (crochet in the back loop only)

Finally, Let’s Create This Crochet Hat!

For the Band:

Row 1: Chain 11, next place 1 HDC (half double crochet) in the second chain from the hook. Now, place 1 HDC in each stitch all the way across to the end. CH (chain) 1 and turn your work.

Row 2: We are going to be working in the BLO (back loops only) of each stitch from here on out. Place 1 HDC in the back loop only of the chain 1 space. Next, place 1 HDC in the back loops only of every stitch all the way to the end. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 3: Now, repeat row 2 until your Crochet Hat band is approximately 19 to 21 inches long. This will depend on the size of your head. Do Not Fasten Off. Fold your crochet hat band in half and SLST (slip stitch) each stitch together along the small edge. This will close off the brim and create a circle. Ch 1. Change to your white yarn.

For The Hat: We will now be working in rounds. We will not be turning our work.

Round 1: First thing is first, place 1 HDC in the chain 1 space. Next, work 1 HDC in each opening all the way around. You should have a total of 64 half double crochet. SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first HDC. Chain 1.

Round 2: For round 2 place 1 HDC in the chain 1 space and 1 HDC in each stitch all the way around. SLST to the top of the first HDC. Chain 1.

Round 3: Repeat round 2. Chain 1. Change to your red yarn.

Round 4: With you red yarn, place 1 HDC in the chain 1 space. Next, place 1 HDC in each remaining stitch. SLSt to the top of the first HDC. Chain 1. Change back to your white yarn.

Rounds 5-7: With your white yarn, repeat round 4. At end of round 7 change back to your red yarn. Chain 1.

Let’s start our decrease rows!

Round 8: For your first 2 stitches you are going to HDC2TOG (half double crochet 2 stitches together). This will make 1 stitch. Next, place *1 HDC in the next 10 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat the pattern of 1 HDC in 10 stitches, HDC2TOG all the way around to the end placing 1 half double crochet in the last 7 remaining stitches. SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first HDC. CH 1.

Round 9: For round 9, HDC2TOG (half double crochet 2 stitches together). Next, place *1 HDC in each of the following 10 stitches, HDC2TOG the next 2 stitches*. Repeat this pattern all the way around to the very beginning. SLST to the top of the first HDC. CH 1.

Round 10: First, HDC2TOG your first 2 stitches. Next, place *1 HDC in each of the next 10 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat this pattern all the way around ending with 1 HDC in the last 2 stitches. SLST to the top of the first HDC. CH 1.

Round 11: For round 11, HDC2TOG your first 2 stitches. Place *1 HDC in the next 5 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat ending with 1 HDC in the last 3 stitches. SLST to the top of the first HDC. CH 1. Change to your green yarn.

Round 12: With your green yarn, HDC2TOG your first 2 stitches. Now, place *1 HDC in the next 4 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat ending with 1 HDC in the last 2 stitches. SLST to the top of the first HDC. CH 1.

Round 13: HDC2TOG your first 2 stitches. Next, place *1 HDC in the following 4 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat, ending with 1 HDC in the last stitch. SLST to the top of the first HDC. CH 1.

Round 14: For round 14 HDC2TOG the first 2 stitches. Next, place *1 HDC in each of the following 4 stitches, HDC2TOG*. Repeat ending with 1 HDC in the last stitch. SLST to the top of the first HDC. Fasten off your yarn making sure to leave a long yarn tail for closing up the top of the Crochet Hat.

Closing up the hat.

Take your yarn needle and tread your green yarn tail. Weave your yarn needle in and out of each stitch opening along the top, pulling the yarn tail tight as you go. Once the top is closed off weave your yarn back and forth to fully secure the opening. Knot off your yarn and weave in your yarn tail.

Grab that Pom Pom Maker

Grab your pom pom maker and follow your manufacturers instructions using the red, green, and white yarn. This will create a multi color pom pom that matches the Crochet Hat perfectly. Attach your pom pom to the top of your Crochet Hat and you are done!
