Beginner-Friendly Crochet Dog Beanie Pattern

Halloween Candy Corn Dog Hat

Well hello again everyone!  This Large Crochet Dog Beanie is by far one of the favorites among our family.  Our German Shepherd, Monkey, is always happy to sport the latest fashion.  With Halloween just around the corner we thought this Large Crochet Dog Beanie that looks like candy corn would be super fun.  It is still a little warm right now for her to wear it but by the time Halloween comes around it will be cool enough.  She loves walking around town and getting all the attention when she wears her dog beanies.  We think that she just looks adorable in her crochet dog beanie, what do you think?

A German Shepherd dog wears a colorful crocheted hat with an orange and white design, sitting in a grassy field.

This Large Crochet Dog Beanie is made with the most basic crochet stitches making it extremely beginner friendly.  You could easily make up a bunch of these in an array of colors and sell them at fun farmers markets or cute little holiday craft fairs.  I think it took me about 30 minutes to make this Large Crochet Dog Beanie.

Here is everything you will need in order to make this Large Crochet Dog Beanie

Yarn:  Red heart super saver in the colors, white, pumpkin orange, and bright yellow.  You will need 1 skein of each color. You can purchase this yarn in the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook:  You will need a 5.5mm crochet hook for this large crochet dog beanie. I really love the crochet hooks with the silicone handles. They feel really nice in your hands when crocheting. You can purchase one of these hooks in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle:  I really love the metal yarn needles, I feel like they weave through the yarn much easier than plastic ones.

Craft Scissors:  I also love the smaller craft scissors.  Not only do they fit nicely in my crochet hook bag, but I also love the way they fit in my hand.

Pom Pom Maker:  A smaller pom pom maker is going to be your friend for this project.  I think it makes a way more consistent looking pom pom.  Of course you can also create pom poms for this large crochet dog beanie by using a piece of cardboard.

Abbreviations:  MC (magic circle), SC (single crochet), DC (double crochet), CH (chain), SLST (slip stitch)

Note:  The Chain 2 and Chain 1 at the beginning DOES NOT count as a stitch.

Yep, Monkey is a giant dork! She loves all of her crochet dog beanies.

For the Large Dog Beanie

Round 1:  With your white yarn, create a magic circle.  Place 10 SC (single crochet) inside the magic circle, pull the yarn tail tight and close up the MC.  SLST (slip stitch) in the top of the first single crochet.  At the end of round 1 you should have 10 SC.

Round 2:  CH 2, place 2 DC (double crochet) in the CH 2 space.  Next, place 2 DC in each stitch around.  SLST to the top of the very first DC.  At the end of round 2 you should have 20 DC.

Round 3:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space, now place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat this pattern all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  At the end of round 3 you should have 30 DC.  Change to your yellow yarn.

Round 4:  With yellow yarn, CH 2.  DC in the CH 2 space, DC in the next stitch, place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way back around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 4 you should have a total of 40 DC.

Round 5:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 3 stitches (for a total of 4 DC), place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in the next 4 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  At the end of round 5 you should have a total of 48 DC.

Round 6:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 4 stitches (for a total of 5 DC), place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in 5 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 6 you should have a total of 56 DC.  Change to your orange yarn!

For the Ear Holes

Round 7:  With your orange yarn, CH 2.  DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 7 stitches.  CH 9, skip 7 stitches and DC in the 8th stitch, now DC in the next 20 stitches, CH 9, skip 7 stitches and DC in the 8th stitch, DC in the last remaining stitches.  You just created the 2 ear holes.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  Note:  If your dog does to have ears you can continue to do a increase round to cover their floppy ears.

Round 8:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space.  DC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 8 you should have a total of 60 DC.

For the final round and the neck ties

Round 9:  CH 1, SC (single crochet) in the CH 1 space.  SC in the next 12 stitches (that should take you to about the middle of the 1st ear hole), CH 41, SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH back down to the previous round, SC in the next 31 stitches (again this should take you to the middle of the 2nd ear hole), CH 41, SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH back down, SC in the last remaining stitches.  SLST to the top of the very first SC.  Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Now for the pom pom

Grab your pom pom maker and your white yarn.  Wrap your white yarn around the first 2 pieces of the pom pom maker that fold out (it sort of looks like a really wide u) and continue to wrap the yarn around this section back and forth until the yarn is as thick as the inside of that portion of the pom pom maker.  You will want to end with your yarn facing toward the outside of the pom pom maker, that way when you fold in the piece toward the center it is now on the inside.  pull your yarn across the top and through the grooves on the other side portion of the pom pom maker.  Now you can start wrapping the yarn around that piece in the exact same fashion as the 1st piece.  Once your yarn is as thick as you want it, fold in the second piece and clip your working yarn.  You can now take your tiny scissors and insert it into the bottom center portion of the pom pom maker (there is a groove there that your scissors will fit in).  Making sure to hold the pom pom maker tightly closed, start clipping the yarn all the way along the grooves.  Do the same thing for the other side.  Next, grab a piece of white yarn about 10 inches or so and run it through the grooves that you can now see.  Flip it over and tie your yarn in a knot.  Pull really tight so it pushes the yarn all the way through and holds all of the yarn together.  I like to tie about 3 knots so it does not come undone.  You can now pull on the 2 small tabs on each side of the pom pom maker and open up each side.  Once the sides are open and not attached to the pom pom you can pull the 2 round center plastic pieces apart.  There you have it, now you have a perfect pom pom for this Large Crochet Dog Beanie.

I hope you all enjoy making this Large Crochet Dog Beanie for your favorite Fur Baby!  As you can see it is super simple to make and takes no time at all.  Have fun with it and change up the colors. While you are at it you could have fun with this Crochet Dog Sweater or this Crochet Pumpkin Table Runner.

Easy Steps for a Fall-Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner

Hi Everyone!  Happy Fall!  It is officially that time of year, summer is coming to an end and fall is beginning.  The weather is getting cooler at night and early morning but thankfully still warming up a bit during the day.  My daughter is a nut for anything and everything Halloween / Fall.  The other day she asked me if I would make a Fall Inspired table runner for the middle of our table that was nothing but pumpkins.  Of course I had to stand up to the challenge.  Let’s face it, crochet pumpkins are super easy to make anyway.  I already had a fantastic pattern for a pumpkin coaster so I thought I would just take that pattern and turn it into a table runner.  I think it turned out really cute!  I hope you enjoy making this Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner.  It is going to be the perfect addition to the middle of any decorative table in your home this fall.

Enough Said, Let us get started with everything that you will need for this Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner!

Size:  5 pumpkins wide by 3 rows deep.  The size of your pumpkin table runner will depend on the size of the crochet hook that you use.  The more pumpkins you make the larger and wider your Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner will be.

Abbreviations:  MC (magic circle), SLST (slip stitch), CH (chain), SC (single crochet), HDC (half double crochet), DC (double crochet)

Skill Level:  Easy, beginner friendly

Note:  The chain 1 at the beginning does not count as a stitch.

Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner Supplies:

Yarn:  I used Lily Sugar and Cream 100% cotton yarn for this project in the colors Hot Orange and Dark Pine.  You will need a minimum of 4 skeins of the hot orange and 1 skein of dark pine.  You can purchase this yarn in the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook4mm Crochet Hook.  I really love the crochet hooks that have the silicone handles.  They seem to fit really comfortably in my hand.  You can find this crochet hook in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle:  Any yarn needle that you have on hand will do.  However, I really do like the metal yarn needles.  I feel like they weave through the yarn so much easier.  Let’s face it, when you have a ton of yarn tails to weave in you want it to go quickly. You can purchase a multi pack of metal yarn needles in the link above.

Scissors:  Any pair of scissors that you have on hand will be fine.  Honestly, I really enjoy the small craft scissors because I can tuck them away in my crochet hook bag.  That way I never have to worry about having a pair on hand in a pinch.  These scissors can be found in the highlighted link above.

This fall inspired pumpkin table runner turned out perfect, don’t you think?

Now on to the Pumpkins Body

With your orange yarn, make as many of these as you would like to create the length and width of your pumpkin table runner.

Round 1:  Create a MC (magic circle), place a SC (single crochet), a HDC (half double crochet), and 5 DC (double crochet) inside the magic circle.  Next, place a HDC, SC, and 5 DC inside the magic circle (that’s right you just did 2 sets inside the magic circle).  Make sure you pull the tail tight and close off your magic circle, SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the very first SC.  CH (chain) 1

Round 2:  SC in the CH 1 space, HDC in the next stitch, now place 2 DC in each of the next 5 stitches, HDC in the next stitch, SC in the next stitch, HDC in the next stitch, and finish off with 2 DC in the last 5 remaining stitches.  SLST to the top of the first SC and CH 1.

Round 3:  SC in the CH 1 space, HDC in the next stitch, now place 2 DC in each of the next 10 stitches, HDC in the next stitch, SC in the next, HDC in the next stitch, and place 2 DC in each of the remaining 10 stitches.  SLST to the top of the first SC and fasten off ad weave in your yarn tails.

For the Pumpkin Stem

Row 1:  With your green yarn.  Find where you fastened off.  This is the top of your pumpkin.  Count over 2 stitches to the right and attach your green yarn.  In the same space where you attached your green yarn, place 1 SC.  SC in the next 3 stitches.  CH 1 and turn your work.

Row 2:  SC in the CH 1 space and SC in the last 3 stitches.  CH 1 and turn your work.

Row 3:  SC in the CH 1 space and SC in the last 3 stitches.  Fasten off and weave in all of your yarn tails.

Now to put this Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner together!

For the first row:  First, take 2 pumpkins (make sure the right sides are facing each other), you will want to tie them together in a way that will allow them to open up and have the 2 right sides facing upward.  I insert my crochet hook into the back loop of the top pumpkin and into the front look of the bottom pumpkin toward the middle and on the side, grab your yarn with your crochet hook and pull it through.  Now you can clip your yarn off long enough to tie in a knot and weave in your yarn tails.  Continue to do this for the entire length that you want your pumpkin table runner.

For the second row:  Do the same thing with another row of pumpkins as you did for the first row.  Once everything is tied in a knot and you have woven in all of your ends, take your pumpkin and lay it right side facing down with the stem down in the little indention at the bottom of the pumpkin.  That way when you get everything tied together and you open it the right sides are facing the same way.  Now, I put my hook through the very middle stitch of the bottom of the pumpkin and in to the middle stitch of the pumpkin stem and pull my yarn through.  I clip my yarn just long enough to be able to tie in a knot and weave in my yarn tails.  I will continue to repeat this all the way down to the very last pumpkin.

For the rest of your pumpkins and rows:  All you have to do is repeat the same process for the first row and the second row until you have attached all of your pumpkins.  It is that simple.

The fun thing about it is that it will work up so fast.  I threw on my latest book that I am listening to on Amazon and went to town. The most time consuming part of the Fall Inspired Pumpkin Table Runner is weaving in all those darn yarn tails.  I hope you enjoy this project as much as I did when I made mine. Another fun project for you to make this fall / halloween would be my Jack Skellington Beanie. It is so simple to make and turned out super cute. I’m sure you have a Jack Skellington fan somewhere in your home or amongst your friends.

Create a Bright C2C Table Runner for Your Home

Hi Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Summer. I can’t believe summer is already coming to an end and school is starting up. I made the C2C Table Runner a few months ago but am just getting around to putting it on here. We had a really busy and exciting summer. We welcomed our first grand baby and moved into a new home. Being sort on time I wanted something simple to make for our dining table. This C2C Table Runner is simple to make and I will try and break it down for you in a way that is easier to understand. I know it took me a while to learn the C2C stitch because most patterns that I came across were either too confusing or the pattern was poorly written. That’s why it took me so long to get this on here. I’m hoping that I am able to create the pattern for this C2C Table Runner in a way that is easy for you to follow. I feel like no matter what your skill level is you should be able to read a pattern and follow along easily.

I think this C2C Table Runner turned out perfect. It’s just the right length for our kitchen table. I didn’t want it to hang off of the edges of the table so I made this C2C Table Runner to cover around 3/4 of the table. The bright yellow cotton yarn that I used with this C2C Table Runner provides the perfect pop of color for our home. I hope you all enjoy this pattern for my C2C Table Runner. Make sure you check out the video below for this C2C Table Runner. While you are there don’t forget to subscribe to my channel.

Hi Everyone! I hope you all are ready for Spring and Summer. I know I sure am. It’s still snowing where I live in Montana and I am so over it. Just last weekend we got 5.5 feet of snow at our house. That being said, I wanted to create something that was going to put me in the summertime mood. This Drink Coaster is a fun watermelon that I thing is going to be perfect for summer. This Drink Coaster is super simple to make that even the newest crocheter will be able to create in in no time at all. I definitely suggest making multiples of this Drink Coaster so you have extra on hand when friends or family come visit.

Abbreviations: MC (magic circle), HDC (half double crochet), SC (single crochet), SLST (slip stitch), CH (chain)

Skill Level: Easy, very beginner friendly

Yarn: Cotton yarn of your liking, I used lily sugar and cream in the colors red, white, hot green, and black. You’ll need 1 skein of each. It should make about 6 coasters. I suggest using cotton yarn because It is going to soak up any moisture that you have dripping off of your cold glass. You can purchase the cotton yarns in the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook: 5 mm crochet hook<a href=”http://<a href=”https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1866551&u=3175406&m=116536&urllink=&afftrack=”>Furls Crochet. I really like the metal crochet hooks that lion brand has to offer. You can purchase them in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle: I really love the metal yarn needles as they seem to weave through the yarn so much easier than the plastic needles. You can purchase a very affordable set of metal yarn needles in the highlighted link above.

Craft Scissors: I like the smaller craft scissors because they easily fit into the bag that carries my crochet hooks. Any pair of scissors that you have on hand is fine. If you would like to purchase a smaller pair of scissors you can do so in the highlighted link.

Now, let’s get started on this Drink Coaster!

Round 1: With Your Pink or Red Yarn, create a MC (magic circle), CH (chain) 1, Place 12 HDC (half double crochet) in the magic circle. SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the very first HDC, CH 1.

Round 2: Place 2 HDC in the CH 1 space, now place 2 HDC in every stitch around. SLST to the top of the very first HDC, CH 1.

Round 3: Place *2 HDC in the CH 1 Space, place 1 HDC in the next stitch*. Repeat from * to *. SLST to the first HDC, CH 1.

Round 4: Place *2 HDC in the CH 1 space, now place 1 HDC in the next 2 stitches*. Repeat from * to *, SLST to the first HDC, CH 1. Change to your white yarn.

Round 5: Place *2 SC (single crochet) in the CH 1 space, now SC in the next 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to *, SLST to the top of the first SC. Change to your Green Yarn and CH 1.

Round 6: SC in the CH 1 space and SC in each stitch all the way around. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Now for the watermelon seeds.

With your black yarn threaded on to your needle and working from back to front, create small lines that resembles the seeds. I like to go over the same black stitch one more time to make it stand out a little more. I then tie the two black pieces of yarn in a knot and weave in the tails. I created 8 seeds on my watermelon Drink Coaster but you can do as many as you want.

I hope you enjoyed making this Drink Coaster as much as I did. I also hope that it brings you some summertime vibes to get you through the last little bit of winter/spring. Easy Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern

Well hello again! I hope you are all having a wonderful day! I’ve really been missing Spring and Summer (it’s still full blown winter here in Montana) so I thought I would make something that could brighten my day and hopefully yours! I absolutely love flamingos! They are my favorite bird. I just can’t get enough of them. I guess you could say that I’m a Crazy Flamingo Lady instead of a Crazy Cat Lady.

I sat down yesterday and decided that I would make a Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern. To my surprise, it was pretty simple to make and it worked up super fast. This Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern would be really cute sewn onto a cotton dishtowel for the kitchen, attached to a little girls baby blanket, or even on a handmade sweater. I’m actually going to use mine as a coaster on my desk, so the possibilities are endless on what you can do with this adorable flamingo appliqué.

I hope that you enjoy making this Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern as much as I did. If you are more of a video person you can follow along on my YouTube channel, @montanacrochetcreations, and create one with me down below.

Straight Leg: With light pink yarn, attach to the bottom of the flamingo body 6 stitches over from the bottom of the neck. CH 18, DC in 4th CH from the hook, SLST in each CH back to the beginning. SLST into the same space where you attached your light pink yarn. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Bent Leg: With light pink yarn, attach to the next stitch (the stitch right behind the straight leg. It should be 7 stitches from the bottom of the flamingo neck. CH 24, DC in 4th CH from the hook, SLST in the next 11 stitches, 2 SC in the next chain, SLST in each remaining CH. SLST into the same space where you attached your pink yarn for the bent leg. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Adding the white on the beak and the black eye:

This was simple, I found some scrap white yarn and threaded it on my needle. I came in from the back of the flamingo head at the widest part (top) of the beak and then inserted my needle into the bottom stitch of the beak. I did this 2 times to make sure that the white yarn was nice and secure. I then took my white yarn and wove through the stitches on the back over to the beginning tail and tied them in a knot and wove in my yarn tails. When I did the eye I just used a basic embroidery stitch to create that and then tucked in my yarn tails.

That’s it! You just made this fun Flamingo Appliqué that can be attached to pretty much anything. I hope you all enjoy making this as much as I did. It really does add that touch of Summer that I am missing right now. If you are in a colder area, I have a fun project for you. These Crochet Dog Booties will protect your fur babies feet from the snow and ice.

I love you all so very much and I will see you in my next Blog Post!

Review of Annie’s Caring Crochet Kit: Fun for a Cause

Hi Everyone! It’s been a while. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas, and New Year. We had a ton happen over the last few months. We found out that we were going to be grandparents, YAY!!!, we moved into a new place, our pregnant daughter and her husband moved back, and our youngest daughter moved back as well. Needless to say January was an extremely crazy month. Not to mention all of the insane weather that we’ve been having, a few weeks ago it was back down to -30 again. It looks like next week is going to be below zero again. I guess the groundhog was right and it looks like we will have at least another 6 weeks of winter here in Montana. In reality we will probably still have another 3 months or so.

The Promoter of Annie’s Kit Club reached out to me a few weeks ago and asked if I would be interested in doing reviews on their products. Of course I said yes. Annie’s Kit Club had me make a list of items I would like to review and they sent me this one, the Annie’s Caring Crochet Kit. I absolutely loved this kit when it arrived and I love the fact that the Annie’s Caring Crochet Kit products you make goes to cancer patients in need all over the country.

<a href=”http://<a href=”https://shareasale.com/u.cfm?d=751045&m=71249&u=3175406&afftrack=”>Annie’s Kit ClubsAnnie’s Caring Crochet Kit came with a detailed pattern that was extremely easy to follow and two different styles of hats to make. The one shown came with a scarf, I thought that it added a nice touch. The yarn itself was extremely soft and seemed to be of super high quality. I was worried in the beginning that it was going to be hard to work with because it was so soft, but that was not the case. It was a nice beginner friendly pattern to follow along with. The good thing about the Annies Caring Crochet Kit is that you will get a new kit every month.

I don’t know about your area but our hospital has programs where you can make beanies for cancer patients, beanies for newborn babies, and even receiving blankets for the newborns. I think that it’s a fun way to get involved in the community.

They wanted me to let you know that you would get 50% off of your first month on any of their kits if you sign up in the highlighted link above. So why not go ahead and sign up. If you are like me and live in a cold area It will give you something fun to do.

I did a YouTube video review for the Annies Caring Crochet Kit and you can watch it down below if you prefer.

Stay tuned as I’m going to be posting some really fun projects coming up here on my blog and my YouTube Channel, @montanacrochetcreations, as well. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out this fun crochet Chicken Drink Coaster, it’s a simple pattern and will work up in no time at all! I love you all so very much and I will see you in my next blog post!

Well Hello Crochet Friends!!! I hope you all are doing well and staying warm this winter. Today’s project brings you the beginning of my Christmas Crochet Projects. I absolutely love Christmas and decided to make a project for everyday that I was off this year (basically Monday through Thursday). This Easy Christmas Wine Cozy is the first of my many projects that I will be posting here through the month of December.

This Easy Christmas Wine Cozy is super easy to create and is the perfect gift bag for that bottle of wine you are gifting this year. I think it’s a fun way to jazz up that bottle of wine and show that you went the extra step to make the gift extra special.

You are going to need a few things for this Easy Christmas Wine Cozy so let’s get started.

Easy Christmas Wine Cozy Supplies

Crochet Hook: 6mm crochet hook. I love the crochet hooks that have the silicone handles. If you would like to purchase a set of crochet hooks from them you can do so in the highlighted link above.

Yarn: I used a #4 worsted weight yarn for this project in the color’s white, delft blue, black, and orange, I used red heart super saver. You can purchase these colors in the highlighted link above.

Buttons: Any style of buttons will work, so get creative with the colors and make this Crochet Snowman Wine Cozy your own.

Yarn Needle: I like a metal yarn needle over the plastic ones. I feel like the metal yarn needles weave through the yarn much easier.

Easy Crochet Scarf Tutorial for Beginners

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all still having an amazing fall. We had a beautiful fall here in Montana. We finally got our first snow over the weekend, and boy did we get snow. We got close to a foot and a half. I definitely took advantage of the snowy weekend and made this beautiful Crochet Scarf, it reminds me of all the changing leaves just outside my office window. When I chose this yarn for this Crochet Scarf that was the first thing I though of.

I’ve pretty much worn this Crochet Scarf everyday since I made it. I just can’t get enough of it. I think that this Crochet Scarf would also make a beautiful Christmas gift for friends and family! Let’s face it, Christmas is only 48 days away! Yikes!!! That’s scary to even think about. I definitely know that I’m not ready for the holidays, much less the beginning of a brand new year.

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy making this Crochet Scarf as much as I did. Let’s get started on this beautiful Crochet Scarf Pattern!

Crochet Scarf Pattern

Supplies:

Crochet Hook: 6.5mm hook. I really like the crochet hooks that have the silicone handles. You can purchase a 6.5mm crochet hook in the highlighted link above.

Yarn: I came across this gorgeous yarn toward the end of summer at Hobby Lobby. It’s the Yarn Bee Sugar Wheel in the Color Candied Orange. I don’t have a link for this yarn but I did see it in my local Hobby Lobby just the other day. If you don’t want to use this color combo you can use any colors you want. You will need 2 skeins of this yarn. Each skein is 355 yards. I also think that Cake in Phoenix would make a beautiful scarf as well. Unfortunately I couldn’t find candied orange anywhere. You can purchase the lion brand mandala cake in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle: I really like to use metal yarn needles. I feel like they weave through the yarn much easier than plastic ones. You can purchase a yarn needle in the highlighted link above.

Craft Scissors: You can use any pair of sharp scissors that you have on hand. I really enjoy using smaller craft scissors since they easily fit in my crochet hook bag and are easy to travel with. You can purchase a pair of craft scissors in the highlighted link above.

Easy Crochet Owl Purse Tutorial

Hi Everyone! This has been an extremely busy summer for me. How has the summer been for all of you? I hope that during these hot summer day you’ve had a chance to relax and get in some family and friends time. It’s been so hot here in Montana (over 100 everyday) that all we’ve wanted to do is stay inside. My friend’s little girl is obsessed with owls so I thought I would create this cute Crochet Owl Purse for her to carry around when they are doing errands. Apparently, she loves the Crochet Owl Purse so much that she totes it around with her everywhere she goes. This includes all over the house. This Crochet Owl purse is the perfect size for little ones and fits all of their little goodies and then some. It’s the perfect gift for any small child or just owl lovers in general.

It’s simple to customize this Crochet Owl Purse. Pick different colors and use safety eyes to give it a more realistic look.

This Crochet Owl Purse is beginner friendly and works up in a matter of a few hours. So if you aren’t spending time at the lake or river, turn on your tv show and bust some of these out for gifts later on.

You are going to need a few things for this Crochet Owl Purse. So let’s get started!

Yarn: Any brand of #4 worsted weight yarn will do. I used red heart super saver in the colors brown (1 skein will be plenty), buff (1 skein will do), white (scrap amounts), gold (scrap amounts), and black (scrap amounts). You will only need a small amount of yarn so it you have scrap yarn on hand that’s perfect! If you do not have these colors on hand you can purchase them through the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook: 4 mm crochet hook. I’ve really been into the metal crochet hooks by Boye. They are affordable and you can purchase them through Lion Brand’s website as well in the highlighted link above.

Safety Eyes: I purchased my safety eyes from Amazon. You can purchase them in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle: Any yarn needle that you have on hand will work fine. I like the metal ones because they seem to weave through the yarn much easier. You can purchase them through the highlighted link above.

Craft Scissors: Any scissors that you have on hand will work. I like the smaller craft scissors because they easily fit in my hook bag. You can purchase them in the highlighted link above.

Abbreviations: MC (magic circle), SC (single crochet), HDC (half double crochet), DC (double crochet), TRC (triple crochet), SLST (slip stitch), CH (chain).

Note: Chain 1 and Chain 2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Crochet over the top of your yarn tails so you have fewer ends to weave through at the end of your Crochet Owl Purse project.

Special Stitches: Triple Crochet, wrap yarn around hook twice, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. You will now have 4 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 more loops, yarn over and pull through last remaining 2 loops on the hook.

Skill Level: Beginner

Round 1:  With your tan yarn, Create a MC (magic circle).  CH 2 (remember this does not count as a stitch).  Place 8 HDC (half double crochet) in the MC.  Pull tail tight to close the MC.  SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first HDC.  At the end of Round 1 you should have a total of 8 HDC.

Round 2:  CH 2, Place 2 HDC in the CH 2 space.  Next, place 2 HDC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first HDC.  At the end of Round 2 you should have a total of 16 HDC.

Round 3:  CH 2, Place 1 HDC in the CH 2 space, place 2 HDC in the next stitch.  Repeat this pattern of * 1 HDC, 2 HDC* all the way until you come back to the beginning of round 3.  SLST to the top of the first HDC.  At the end of Round 3 you should have a total of 24 HDC.

Round 4:  CH 2, Place 1 HDC in the CH 1 space and in the next stitch.  Place 2 HDC in the following stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 HDC in the next 2 stitches, 2 HDC in the next stitch*.  SLST to the top of the first HDC of round 4.  At the end of Round 4 you should have a total of 32 HDC.

Round 5:  CH 2, Place 1 HDC in the CH 2 space, next place 1 HDC in the following 3 stitches.  Repeat the pattern of * 1 HDC in the next 3 stitches, 2 HDC in the next*.  SLST to the top of the first HDC of round 5.  At the end of Round 5 you should have a total of 40 HDC.

Rounds 6-15:  CH 2, Place 1 HDC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first HDC.  At the end of Round 15 you should have a total of 40 HDC.  Switch to your dark brown yarn.

Rounds 16-21:  CH 2, Place 1 HDC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first HDC.  At the end of round 21 you should still have a total of 40 HDC.

Now for the points that will look like the cute ears.

Round 22:  CH 1 (does not count as a stitch).  SC in the next 5 stitches, HDC in the next stitch, DC in the next 2 stitches, TRC (triple crochet) in the next 4 stitches, DC in the next 2 stitches, HDC in the next stitch, SC in the next 10 stitches.  Now HDC in the next stitch, DC in the next 2, TRC in the next 4, DC in the next 2, HDC in the stitch.  SC in the last remaining stitches.  Fasten off your yarn and weave in your yarn tails.

Lets work on the eyes!

Eyes:  Make 2.

Round 1:  With your white yarn, create a MC.  Place 6 SC in the MC.  Pull tail tight to close the circle.  SLST to the top of the first SC.  At the end of round 1 you will have a total of 6 SC.

Round 2:  CH 1, Place 2 SC in the CH 1 space and in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first SC.  At the end of round 2 you should have a total of 12 SC.  Fasten off your yarn, leaving a long enough yarn tail to attach the eyes to the Owl Purse.

Let’s Create the Beak!

With your gold yarn, Chain 4, SC in the second chain from the hook.  In the next stitch place *1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 HDC*, SC in the last stitch.  Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail long enough to attach to the Owl Purse.

Lastly, lets make the tie for this cute crochet owl purse!

Draw String:  With your dark brown yarn, chain 70.  Fasten off.

Now for the fun part, let’s put this cute crochet owl purse together.

Eye Placement:  I placed my eyes just above where the tan and dark brown yarn meet.  Thread you needle, with your yarn tail place the first eye on your crochet purse.  Weave your yarn back and forth from front to back all the way around.  Weave your yarn tail on the inside of the purse so it is hidden.  Now, repeat the process for the second eye.  At this point you can take your small scrap yarn and create a line in the eye or use your safety eyes.

Beak placement:  The beak will be placed just below the eyes in the light tan portion.  Don’t forget to center the beak between the two eyes.  Attach in the same fashion as you did the eyes.

Adding the tie:  start the row above and to the middle of the eye on the right hand side.  Run your crochet hook through the back of the stitch and pull the chain through the stitch.  Continue to repeat this every other stitch until the chain is just above the center of the eye on the left.  Pull the draw string tight and tie in a cute bow.
