Easy Crochet Scarf Tutorial for Beginners

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all still having an amazing fall. We had a beautiful fall here in Montana. We finally got our first snow over the weekend, and boy did we get snow. We got close to a foot and a half. I definitely took advantage of the snowy weekend and made this beautiful Crochet Scarf, it reminds me of all the changing leaves just outside my office window. When I chose this yarn for this Crochet Scarf that was the first thing I though of.

I’ve pretty much worn this Crochet Scarf everyday since I made it. I just can’t get enough of it. I think that this Crochet Scarf would also make a beautiful Christmas gift for friends and family! Let’s face it, Christmas is only 48 days away! Yikes!!! That’s scary to even think about. I definitely know that I’m not ready for the holidays, much less the beginning of a brand new year.

Anyway, I hope that you enjoy making this Crochet Scarf as much as I did. Let’s get started on this beautiful Crochet Scarf Pattern!

Crochet Scarf Pattern

Special Stitches: HDC2TOG, Yarn over and insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 stitches, yarn over and pull through all 3 stitches. BO, yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, repeat for a total of 5 loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. DCX, yarn over, skip next stitch and insert hook into following stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through last 2 loops to create your first double crochet, yarn over and insert hook into skipped stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 loops.

Note: CH 2 at the beginning does not count as a stitch. CH 3 at the beginning does count as a stitch.

Supplies:

Crochet Hook: 6.5mm hook. I really like the crochet hooks that have the silicone handles. You can purchase a 6.5mm crochet hook in the highlighted link above.

Yarn: I came across this gorgeous yarn toward the end of summer at Hobby Lobby. It’s the Yarn Bee Sugar Wheel in the Color Candied Orange. I don’t have a link for this yarn but I did see it in my local Hobby Lobby just the other day. If you don’t want to use this color combo you can use any colors you want. You will need 2 skeins of this yarn. Each skein is 355 yards. I also think that Cake in Phoenix would make a beautiful scarf as well. Unfortunately I couldn’t find candied orange anywhere. You can purchase the lion brand mandala cake in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle: I really like to use metal yarn needles. I feel like they weave through the yarn much easier than plastic ones. You can purchase a yarn needle in the highlighted link above.

Craft Scissors: You can use any pair of sharp scissors that you have on hand. I really enjoy using smaller craft scissors since they easily fit in my crochet hook bag and are easy to travel with. You can purchase a pair of craft scissors in the highlighted link above.

Beginners Crochet Scarf Tutorial

Round 1: CH (chain) 102, SC (single crochet) in the 2nd CH from the hook, continue to SC in each stitch all the way to the end. Without twisting your chain SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first SC. CH 1. At the end of round 1 you should have 101 stitches. Note: If you are having a hard time seeing where you placed your beginning CH 1 you can use a stitch marker. Just place the stitch marker in the SC that you place in the CH 1 space. It really does help for beginner crocheters.

Round 2: BLO (back loop only) SC in the CH 1 space. Continue to BLO SC in each stitch all the way around to the end. CH 1. At the end of round 2 you should still have a total of 101 stitches.

Rounds 3-11: Repeat round 2. At the end of round 11 fasten off your yarn and weave in your yarn tails. Note: Remember when weaving in your yarn tail to go back and forth a minimum of 3 times. That way your yarn does not come undone in the wash. At the end of each round you should still have a total of 101 stitches.

Easy Modern Crochet Scarf Pattern

A few weeks ago it was one of the first cool days here in Montana. I broke out my stash of yarn and made a really cute chunky scarf with tassels. I posted it on social media and had a ton of requests for me to make friends and family each one. So far I have made a crochet scarf for myself, one for a cousin and her daughter (cute little matching mommy and me set), and one for my husband’s aunt. I think this last scarf for my husband’s aunt came out really cute so I wanted to share it with you.

I’m really big into Modern Style everything lately so why not a modern style crochet scarf. I love that this scarf is on an angle giving it that modern flare. If I didn’t already promise the black and white scarf to her I would have kept it for myself.

Lean on Me Crochet Scarf Free Pattern

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver #4 Worsted Weight Yarn in the colors black and white. You will need approximately 280 yards total. You can purchase it in the highlighted link.

Hook: 6 mm crochet hook. I’m really digging the crochet hooks with the silicone covering over the shaft. Lately I have felt that they are a little more comfortable to hold.

Craft Scissors: You can use any scissors that you have on hand for this project. I really like using the smaller sized craft scissors because they fit perfectly in my crochet hook bag. You can purchase them in the highlighted link.

Yarn Needle: I like using metal yarn needles over plastic ones. I feel like the metal yarn needles weave through the crocheted yarn much easier. You can purchase a yarn needle through the highlighted link.

Scarf Size: 9″ wide by 90″ long without the tassels. Tassels are approximately 6″ long.

Abbreviations: APPROX (approximately), BEG (beginning), CH (chain), HDC (half double crochet), HDC2Tog (half double crochet 2 together…yarn over and draw up a loop pull through 2 loops, yarn over and insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook), PAT (pattern), REM (remaining), REP (repeat), YOH (yarn over hook).

Gauge: 12 HDC and 9 rows equal 4″.

Pattern Difficulty: Easy. You can find a full printable pattern on Yarnspirations.com

Note: Chain 2 at beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. Pattern is written for one single color. I used 2 colors. If you want to create something like mine then follow the pattern with one color for 10 rows then change to your second color. All you need to do is repeat till the scarf is the length you desire. 90″ long may be overkill for some people. For example: I did 10 rows in black and 10 rows in white and repeated till I came to my desired length. Get creative with it. You can do as many colors as you would like. It would be really cute as a Christmas theme or Halloween theme.

Now, Let’s get started.

Chain 29.

Row 1: Place 2 HDC in the second chain from the hook. Next, place 1 HDC in each chain all the way to the last 2 chan spaces. Lastly, HDC2Tog in the last two stitches. You should have a total of 27 stitches. Not sure about the HDC2Tog stitch? Learn how to create it here.

Row 2: Chain 2 and turn your work, (remember this does not count as a stitch), First, HDC2Tog, HDC in each stitch across, next, place 2 HDC in last stitch. You should still have a total of 27 stitches.

Row 3: Chain 2 and turn your work, place 2 HDC in first stitch, next, place 1 HDC all the way across to the last 2 stitches, finally, HDC2Tog for the last 2 stitches. You should still have 27 stitches.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your work from the beginning measures approximately 90″. Fasten off and weave in your ends. You should still have 27 stitches at the end of each row.

Now, Lets Make The Tassels

Tassels: You will make 4. Cut a piece of cardboard to approximately 6″ wide. Wind the yarn around the cardboard 80 times. Break your yarn, cutting a long tail, thread through all the loops on the cardboard, tie tightly in a knot. Remove the cardboard and wind another piece of yarn around the top part of the yarn (to create the top of the tassels) about a half to one inch down. Tie this tightly in a knot as well. Now, cut through all the loops at the bottom of the tassel and trim the ends as evenly as you can. You will need 4. One tassel for each corner of the scarf. With the tail at the top of the tassels pull one piece through the end of one of the scarf corners and tie in a knot. Take a yarn needle and weave in both ends. Repeat this process on the other 3 corners.

That’s it! This Crochet Scarf Pattern is super simple to make and depending on the yarn it’s extremely warm.
