Festive Crochet Turkey Hat Pattern for November

Happy November Everyone! I can’t believe it’s already November! Just like all of you, I have no idea where the year has gone. Today’s post brings me to this really cute Crochet Hat Pattern requested by a friend. I think it’s perfect for the entire month of November.

My dear friend wanted something festive that she could wear the entire month. She didn’t say what, so I let my creativity flow and created this really cute Crochet Turkey Hat for her. It’s not a normal fall here in Montana as the days are still in the 50’s but it’s still in the teens and low 20’s of the morning. Most of us Montanans don’t even bother putting on a coat or hat but sometimes we feel like being festive.

I took to my dwindling yarn stash once again and found the perfect colors for this hat. Not to self, I need to stock up on brown and white. I used every last scrap I had to create this Crochet Hat. I hope you enjoy making this hat as much as I did. Please leave comments and pictures below, I’d love to see your finished projects.

What you are going to need!

Yarn: Any #4 worsted weight yarn, I used red heart super saver in the colors Brown, Pumpkin, Green, Red, and White.

Crochet Hooks: Any crochet in the following sizes. 5mm (H/8), 5.5mm (I/9), 6.5mm (K/10). I have really been into the crochet hooks with the silicone handles. You can purchase these crochet hooks in the link above.

Yarn Needle: Any yarn needle will do. Just make sure your yarn easily fits through the eye.

Googly Eyes: The bigger the better for the googly eyes. You can purchase them in the highlighted link.

Hot Glue Gun: Any hot glue gun that you have is fine. Don’t forget to get extra hot glue sticks. You can purchase these in the highlighted links.

Craft Scissors: Any pair of scissors will do. I like the smaller scissors because they fit nicely in my crochet bag.

Gauge: 13 HDC x 9 rows equals 4″.

Abbreviations: CH (chain), SLST (slip stitch), SC (single crochet), HDC (half double crochet), FPHDC (front post half double crochet), BPHDC (back post half double crochet), DC (double crochet), TRC (triple crochet)

Note: Beginning chain does not count as a stitch. FPHDC (yarn over and insert hook through opening next to stitch from the front of the hat, place hook behind stitch and through next opening, yarn over and pull your loop through behind the stitch, You should have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on your hook. You’ve created a front post half double crochet). BPHDC (yarn over and insert hook in opening next to your stitch from behind the hat, place hook in front of stitch and insert through next opening, yarn over and pull your loop all the way through, you should shave three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook. You have just created a back post half double crochet). Magic Circle (holding your yarn between your thumb and ring finger, create a loop that crosses over the tops of your index and middle fingers. Take your hook and grab the piece of yarn that is in the back, pull through and twist (this creates a loop on your hook). Grab your yarn that is attached to your ball and pull through the loop on your hook. You have now created a magic circle. When closing your magic circle, pull the tail (the yarn not attached to your ball) to close the circle. TRC (yarn over your hook 2 times, insert your hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 more loops, yarn over again and pull through last 2 loops.

For the waddle: With red yarn, chain 8. Place 3 SC in 2nd chain from the hook. Now place 3 SC in each stitch across. Fasten off and leave a long tail for attaching the waddle to the crochet hat. Note: Your waddle will look like it’s curled.

For the Pom Pom: With your red yarn, chain 82. Now clip your red yarn and attach your orange yarn, Chain 82 again. Clip your orange yarn and attach your green yarn, chain 82 one last time. Do not fasten off. SLST in every 12th stitch all the way down to the end. Fasten off leaving a long tail. Grab your yarn needle and weave in your yarn ends through out the chain where you changed colors. Thread your tail onto your yarn needle and weave your needle back and forth through each stitch. At the end pull the yarn tight to close the chain into a ball. Clip your yarn and secure the two tails with a knot. This is what you will use to attach the pom pom to your hat.

Assembly: Attach your two eyes to the hat. I like to use a whip stitch to attach the eyes. Make sure to place them as close together as possible. I think it looks cute with the eyes touching each other. Weave in your ends. Now grab your beak. Place just below the eyes and attach with a whip stitch to the crochet hat, weave in your ends. Next, place your waddle just above the beak and below the eyes. Attach to the crochet hat with a whip stitch. Weave in your tails. Lastly, pull your two yarn tails from the pom pom through the very top of the hat. Secure with a knot and weave in your ends. Grab your hot glue gun and preheat. Glue your googly eyes to the middle of the white eyes and you are done!
