Customizable Crochet Laptop Case Tutorial

Today’s project is all work related for me. I’m a full time Real Estate Agent and needed something to protect my MacBook Air. It’s been getting pretty beat up in my purse. I thought I would crochet something really cute and Halloween related to protect it. I chose to use orange and black to create this Crochet Laptop Case changing the colors every 5 rounds. It’s a little big for my laptop but I wanted to make it bigger so it could fit a laptop up to 14 or 15 inches. It’s made with Red Heart Super Saver yarn and worked up fairly quickly. I think it took me a few days only because I was running around busy with Real Estate. I hope you enjoy this pattern and get creative with the colors. It’s a simple pattern and can be made larger or smaller just by changing the number of chains.

What you will need

Yarn: Any #4 worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver yarn in the colors Pumpkin and Black. You can purchase them in the link below.

Crochet Hook: 3.75mm (F/5). I really love the crochet hooks with the silicone handles. You could use a larger hook if you wanted, just make sure to adjust the chains according to the size of your laptop. I also really love the crochet hooks from <a href=”http://<a href=”https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=2008472&u=3175406&m=116536&urllink=&afftrack=”>Mint OdysseyFurls Crochet. Not only are they beautiful to look at, they are comfortable in your hand while crocheting too. You can purchase them in the highlighted link.

Craft Scissors: I like to use the 4.5″ craft scissors. They are compact enough to fit in my crochet bag making it easy for transportation while traveling. You can purchase yourself a pair of craft scissors in the link below.

Other Supplies: You will also need a yarn needle, a stitch marker and 2 buttons (1/4 inch or so). You can purchase them in the link above.

Abbreviations: CH (chain), SC (single crochet), HDC (half double crochet), HDC2TOG (half double crochet 2 together), SLST (slip stitch).

Now, let’s get started on this cute laptop case.

Round 1: With your black yarn, Chain 38, SC (single crochet) in second chain from the hook and all the way down to the end. In the last SC place 4 SC. This will allow you to work around and down the other side. Place 1 SC in the next stitch and in each stitch to the end. in the last stitch place 4 SC. Join with a SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first SC. Note: Place your stitch marker in the stitch you just joined. This is going to be your starting point on every round. We will be working in a continuous round from here on out.

Rounds 2-5: SC in the next stitch and in each stitch all the way around to the beginning. Join with a SLST to the top of the first SC. Move your stitch marker up. At the end of round 5 switch to your orange yarn.

Rounds 6-10: SC in the first stitch and in each stitch all the way around. Join with a SLST to the top of the firs SC. Move your stitch marker up. At the end of round 10 switch back to your black yarn.

Rounds 11-50: Repeat the previous round, switching colors every 5 rounds. When you come to the end of round 50 fasten off and weave in your ends.

Let’s work on the top flap.

Row 1: We are now working back and forth in rows. Attach your black yarn in the corner of the case. HDC (half double crochet) in the same stitch where you attached your yarn. HDC in each stitch across to the opposite corner. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 2: Repeat row 1.

Row 3: We are going to start on a decrease for the lid. HDC2TOG (half double crochet 2 together) in the first 2 stitches, HDC in all the stitches except the last 2 stitches. HDC2TOG in the last 2 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work. Not sure how to HDC2TOG? You can learn how to do so here.

Row 4: HDC in each stitch all the way across to the end. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 5: HDC2TOG, HDC in each stitch across, HDC2TOG in the last 2 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 6: HDC in each stitch all the way across to the end. Chain 1 and turn your work.

Row 7: Repeat Rows 5 and 6 until you have the desired length for the laptop case flap. Once you have reached your desired length fasten off your yarn and weave in your ends.

Now, let’s attach the buttons. Fold your lid over and decide where you want to attach your buttons. Once you have figured out where you want your buttons to go, sew them on with your yarn. The HDC will act as a natural button hole. That’s it! This is a simple crochet pattern that will help protect your laptop.

I hope you enjoy making this Crochet Laptop Case as much as I did. The pattern is simple and versatile, you can mix and match the colors in any variation that you would like. I think it would be pretty fun to have a case for every holiday and every season. Looking for a few great gift ideas?
