Easy Dog Hat Pattern for Thanksgiving

We are currently about 2 weeks away for Thanksgiving!  I can’t believe that in a few weeks everyone will be in a Christmas shopping frenzy.  Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  I love the smells of Thanksgiving and all the food, but then again, who doesn’t.  This year I decided to make Thanksgiving turkey hats for our 2 dogs and 2 cats.  This one is a small dog hat for our orange Maine Coon kitty, Pumpkin (aka poop).  I had quite a few subscribers to my YouTube channel ask for a small crochet dog hat so I took the opportunity to turn it into a turkey for Thanksgiving and a photo opportunity.

Clearly Poop was not happy with the fact that I made him wear this small dog hat.  The funny thing is that he may be a kitty but he thinks he is a dog.

I hope you all enjoy making this small dog hat for your fur babies.  If you prefer to watch a video tutorial while making this small dog hat you can do so on my YouTube channel down below. While you are there make sure you like, comment, share, and subscribe to my channel.  If you really like what I do consider becoming a Super’s member by purchasing a supers package.  This helps me continue to make new and fun crochet projects for you to do at home.

Here is everything that you need to know in order to make this small dog hat.

Special StitchesSC2TOG (single crochet 2 stitches together), insert your hook in the next stitch yarn over and pull through said stitch, insert your hook into the very next stitch, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.

Pattern written in US terms.

Note:  If you want to turn this into a extra small you can size down to a 4.5mm crochet hook.

Here is everything you will need to make this small dog hat.

Yarn:  Any #4 worsted weight yarn will do.  I used Red Heart Super Saver and Red Heart Classic to make this small dog hat.  The colors used were brown, pumpkin, red, green, yellow, white, and black.  You will only need a scrap amount of white, black, red, pumpkin, yellow, and green.  One skein of brown will be more than enough for this small dog hat. You can purchase these yarns in the highlighted links above.

Crochet hook5 mm crochet hook.

Yarn needle:  Any yarn needle that you have on hand is fine.  Just make sure the eye of the needle is large enough for your yarn.  I like using metal yarn needles.  I feel like they weave through the yarn easier than plastic ones do.

Scissors:  Any pair of scissors you have is fine.  I like using the smaller craft scissors because I can tuck them away in my crochet hook bag.

I watch Prime video a lot during my down time and they are always coming out with new things to watch. You can check it out in the highlighted link.

Now, let’s get to making this fun small dog hat.

With your brown yarn:

Round 1:  Create a MC (magic circle), place 8 SC (single crochet) inside the magic circle.  Pull your yarn tail tight to close up the magic circle and SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the very first SC.  CH (chain) 2.  At the end of round 1 you should have 8 stitches.

Round 2:  Place 2 DC (double crochet) in the CH 2 space.  Now, place 2 DC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the very first DC and CH 2.  At the end of round 2 you should have 16 stitches.

Round 3:  Place 1 DC in the CH 2 space.  Place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC, 2 DC* all the way around.  SLST to the top of the very first DC and CH 2.  At the end of round 3 you should have 24 DC.

Round 4:  Place 1 DC in the CH 2 space and in the next stitch.  Place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in the next 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way around.  SLST to the top of the very first DC and CH 2.  At the end of round 4 you should have 32 DC.

Round 5:  We are going to be creating the ear holes here.  Place 1 DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 2 stitches.  CH 12, skip 6 stitches and DC in the 7th stitch.  Place 1 DC in the next 7 stitches, CH 12, skip 6 stitches and DC in the 7th stitch.  Place 1 DC in each of the remaining stitches.  SLST to the top of the first DC and CH 2.  At the end of round 5 you should have 44 stitches, this included your chains.

Round 6:  DC in the CH 2 space, place 1 DC in each stitch including every chain.  SLST to the top of the first DC and CH 1.  At the end of round 6 you should have 44 stitches.

Round 7:  Place 1 SC in the CH 1 space and in each stitch until you come to the middle of the ear hole, CH 30, SC in the 2nd CH from your hook, SC in each chain all the way back down.  SC in each stitch around until you come to the middle of the second ear hole, CH 30, SC in the 2nd CH from your hook, SC in each stitch all the way down.  SC in each remaining stitch.  SLST to the top of the very first SC and fasten off your work.  Weave in your yarn tails.

For the turkey eyes (Make 2):

With your white yarn, create a MC, Place 6 SC inside the MC.  Pull your tail tight to close and SLST to the top of the first SC.  Leave yourself a yarn tail long enough to fasten your eye to the small dog hat.  Now grab a small piece of black yarn and create the pupil by stitching a ling from the back to the front of the eye.  Tie the black yarn in a knot on the back side and weave in your yarn tails.

For the turkey waddle:

With your red yarn, CH 6.  Place 3 SC in the 2nd CH from the hook.  Now, place 3 SC in every stitch all the way to the end of your chain.  Fasten off and leave your self a yarn tail long enough to attach the waddle to the turkey hat.

For the turkey beak:

Row 1:  With your orange yarn, CH 5.  SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each stitch all the way to the end.  CH 1 and turn your work.  At the end of round 1 you should have 4 stitches.

Row 2:  SC2TOG (single crochet 2 stitches together) the first 2 stitches, SC2TOG the next 2 stitches.  CH 1 and turn your work.  At the end of row 2 you should have 2 stitches.

Row 3:  SC2TOG your only 2 stitches.  CH 1 and fasten off.  Leave yourself a tail long enough to attach the beak to your small dog hat.

For the turkey feathers (make one for each of your colors):

CH 10, Place 3 SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each stitch all the way to the very end.  Fasten off and leave a tail long enough to attach your feathers to your small dog hat.

Weave in all the tails that you are not using on all of your pieces except for the feathers.  You will need both of those tails.

Attaching the eyes:  Grab your turkey eyes and place them on the front part of your small dog hat.  When your small dog hat is laying flat the front portion of the ear holes is smaller than the back portion.  It will have a small space that fits between the ears, that is how you know it is the front.  I like to position my eyes about 3 rounds down and have them touching each other.  Thread your yarn needle and stitch your eyes to your hat by weaving your yarn through the eye and the top layer of the small dog hat.  Do this all the way around your eye.  Weave your yarn tail in the underneath side of the hat.  Now do this with the second eye.

Attaching the beak:  Place your turkey beak directly under your eyes.  Make sure the top portion of the beak is touching the bottom of the eyes.  Attach the beak the exact same way you attached the eyes.

Attaching the waddle:  Place your turkey waddle on the top of the beak and under the eyes.  This should make it look like the flat portion of the turkey waddle lays across the top of the beak.  Attach the waddle the same way you did the eyes and beak, but only attach along the flat portion of the waddle.  There is no need to attach the curled portion.

Attaching the feathers:  Take your first feather and pull both of your yarn tails through the top of the hat.  I like to use round 1 as a guide.  I also use my crochet hook to pull the tails through.  Try and not pull both tails through the same stitch.  Tie your yarn tails in a knot and weave them in.  Now move on to your other feathers and attach the same way making sure to position evenly around the top of the small dog hat.

And there you have it, you just created this really fun small dog hat that looks like a turkey.  If you have several small animals it would be a really fun photo opportunity. Beginner-Friendly Crochet Dog Beanie Pattern

Halloween Candy Corn Dog Hat

Well hello again everyone!  This Large Crochet Dog Beanie is by far one of the favorites among our family.  Our German Shepherd, Monkey, is always happy to sport the latest fashion.  With Halloween just around the corner we thought this Large Crochet Dog Beanie that looks like candy corn would be super fun.  It is still a little warm right now for her to wear it but by the time Halloween comes around it will be cool enough.  She loves walking around town and getting all the attention when she wears her dog beanies.  We think that she just looks adorable in her crochet dog beanie, what do you think?

A German Shepherd dog wears a colorful crocheted hat with an orange and white design, sitting in a grassy field.

This Large Crochet Dog Beanie is made with the most basic crochet stitches making it extremely beginner friendly.  You could easily make up a bunch of these in an array of colors and sell them at fun farmers markets or cute little holiday craft fairs.  I think it took me about 30 minutes to make this Large Crochet Dog Beanie.

Here is everything you will need in order to make this Large Crochet Dog Beanie

Yarn:  Red heart super saver in the colors, white, pumpkin orange, and bright yellow.  You will need 1 skein of each color. You can purchase this yarn in the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook:  You will need a 5.5mm crochet hook for this large crochet dog beanie. I really love the crochet hooks with the silicone handles. They feel really nice in your hands when crocheting. You can purchase one of these hooks in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle:  I really love the metal yarn needles, I feel like they weave through the yarn much easier than plastic ones.

Craft Scissors:  I also love the smaller craft scissors.  Not only do they fit nicely in my crochet hook bag, but I also love the way they fit in my hand.

Pom Pom Maker:  A smaller pom pom maker is going to be your friend for this project.  I think it makes a way more consistent looking pom pom.  Of course you can also create pom poms for this large crochet dog beanie by using a piece of cardboard.

Abbreviations:  MC (magic circle), SC (single crochet), DC (double crochet), CH (chain), SLST (slip stitch)

Note:  The Chain 2 and Chain 1 at the beginning DOES NOT count as a stitch.

Yep, Monkey is a giant dork! She loves all of her crochet dog beanies.

For the Large Dog Beanie

Round 1:  With your white yarn, create a magic circle.  Place 10 SC (single crochet) inside the magic circle, pull the yarn tail tight and close up the MC.  SLST (slip stitch) in the top of the first single crochet.  At the end of round 1 you should have 10 SC.

Round 2:  CH 2, place 2 DC (double crochet) in the CH 2 space.  Next, place 2 DC in each stitch around.  SLST to the top of the very first DC.  At the end of round 2 you should have 20 DC.

Round 3:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space, now place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat this pattern all the way around.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  At the end of round 3 you should have 30 DC.  Change to your yellow yarn.

Round 4:  With yellow yarn, CH 2.  DC in the CH 2 space, DC in the next stitch, place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way back around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 4 you should have a total of 40 DC.

Round 5:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 3 stitches (for a total of 4 DC), place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in the next 4 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  At the end of round 5 you should have a total of 48 DC.

Round 6:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 4 stitches (for a total of 5 DC), place 2 DC in the next stitch.  Repeat the pattern of *1 DC in 5 stitches, 2 DC in the next* all the way around to the beginning.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 6 you should have a total of 56 DC.  Change to your orange yarn!

For the Ear Holes

Round 7:  With your orange yarn, CH 2.  DC in the CH 2 space and in the next 7 stitches.  CH 9, skip 7 stitches and DC in the 8th stitch, now DC in the next 20 stitches, CH 9, skip 7 stitches and DC in the 8th stitch, DC in the last remaining stitches.  You just created the 2 ear holes.  SLST to the top of the first DC.  Note:  If your dog does to have ears you can continue to do a increase round to cover their floppy ears.

Round 8:  CH 2, DC in the CH 2 space.  DC in each stitch all the way around.  SLST to the top of the 1st DC.  At the end of round 8 you should have a total of 60 DC.

For the final round and the neck ties

Round 9:  CH 1, SC (single crochet) in the CH 1 space.  SC in the next 12 stitches (that should take you to about the middle of the 1st ear hole), CH 41, SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH back down to the previous round, SC in the next 31 stitches (again this should take you to the middle of the 2nd ear hole), CH 41, SC in the 2nd CH from the hook and in each CH back down, SC in the last remaining stitches.  SLST to the top of the very first SC.  Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Now for the pom pom

Grab your pom pom maker and your white yarn.  Wrap your white yarn around the first 2 pieces of the pom pom maker that fold out (it sort of looks like a really wide u) and continue to wrap the yarn around this section back and forth until the yarn is as thick as the inside of that portion of the pom pom maker.  You will want to end with your yarn facing toward the outside of the pom pom maker, that way when you fold in the piece toward the center it is now on the inside.  pull your yarn across the top and through the grooves on the other side portion of the pom pom maker.  Now you can start wrapping the yarn around that piece in the exact same fashion as the 1st piece.  Once your yarn is as thick as you want it, fold in the second piece and clip your working yarn.  You can now take your tiny scissors and insert it into the bottom center portion of the pom pom maker (there is a groove there that your scissors will fit in).  Making sure to hold the pom pom maker tightly closed, start clipping the yarn all the way along the grooves.  Do the same thing for the other side.  Next, grab a piece of white yarn about 10 inches or so and run it through the grooves that you can now see.  Flip it over and tie your yarn in a knot.  Pull really tight so it pushes the yarn all the way through and holds all of the yarn together.  I like to tie about 3 knots so it does not come undone.  You can now pull on the 2 small tabs on each side of the pom pom maker and open up each side.  Once the sides are open and not attached to the pom pom you can pull the 2 round center plastic pieces apart.  There you have it, now you have a perfect pom pom for this Large Crochet Dog Beanie.

I hope you all enjoy making this Large Crochet Dog Beanie for your favorite Fur Baby!  As you can see it is super simple to make and takes no time at all.  Have fun with it and change up the colors. While you are at it you could have fun with this Crochet Dog Sweater or this Crochet Pumpkin Table Runner.

Easy Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern

Well hello again! I hope you are all having a wonderful day! I’ve really been missing Spring and Summer (it’s still full blown winter here in Montana) so I thought I would make something that could brighten my day and hopefully yours! I absolutely love flamingos! They are my favorite bird. I just can’t get enough of them. I guess you could say that I’m a Crazy Flamingo Lady instead of a Crazy Cat Lady.

I sat down yesterday and decided that I would make a Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern. To my surprise, it was pretty simple to make and it worked up super fast. This Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern would be really cute sewn onto a cotton dishtowel for the kitchen, attached to a little girls baby blanket, or even on a handmade sweater. I’m actually going to use mine as a coaster on my desk, so the possibilities are endless on what you can do with this adorable flamingo appliqué.

I hope that you enjoy making this Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern as much as I did. If you are more of a video person you can follow along on my YouTube channel, @montanacrochetcreations, and create one with me down below.

Here’s what you are going to need to know for this Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern

Difficulty: Easy

Yarn: If using it as an appliqué you can use #4 worsted weight yarn, I used red heart super saver. If you are going to use it as a coaster or anywhere in the kitchen I suggest using cotton yarn. You will need the following colors: Shocking Pink, Pretty in Pink, black, white. I love the Lion Brand yarns, you can purchase them in the highlighted links above.

Crochet Hook Size: H/5mm hook. I love the crochet hooks with the silicone handles. You can purchase this hook in the highlighted link.

Craft Scissors: Any pair of scissors that you have on hand will work just fine. You can purchase them in the highlighted link.

Yarn Needle: I love using metal yarn needles over plastic ones as they tend to weave through the yarn easier.

Abbreviations: MC (magic circle), SC (single crochet), HDC (half double crochet), TRC (triple crochet), SLST (slip stitch), CH (chain), SC2Tog (single crochet 2 stitches together).

Now, let’s get started on this Flamingo Appliqué Crochet Pattern

Flamingo Body:

Round 1: With dark pink, create a MC (magic circle) and CH (chain) 2. Place the following inside the MC, 2 DC (double crochet), HDC (half double crochet), 4 SC (single crochet), HDC, 2 DC, HDC, 4 SC. SLST (slip stitch) to the top of the first DC and pull tail tight to close the MC. CH 2 (this does not count as a stitch).

Round 2: Next, Place 2 DC in the CH 2 space, DC in the next 5 stitches, place 2 DC in the next 3 stitches, DC in the next 5 stitches, 2 DC in the very last stitch. SLST to the top of the first DC. CH 1.

Round 3: Place 2 DC in the next 14 stitches, DC and HDC in the next stitch, SC and HDC in the last stitch. SLST to the top of the first DC and fasten off your work. At this point I recommend you weaving in your yarn tails.

Flamingo Head:

Still using dark pink, attach your yarn 8 stitches from where you fastened off. CH 22, DC in the 4th CH from the hook, TRC (triple crochet) in the next 2 stitches, DC, SC2TOG (single crochet two stitches together) 3 times, SC in the next 5 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch, 2 HDC in the next, 2 DC in next stitch, DC in the last 2 stitches. SLST to the body of the flamingo where you attached your yarn when starting the neck and head. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Flamingo Beak:

With your black yarn, attach to the top of the flamingo head (basically the CH 4 that you skipped), CH 5. SC2TOG, SC, HDC, SLST to the head 2 stitches over from where you attached the black yarn. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Flamingo Legs:

Straight Leg: With light pink yarn, attach to the bottom of the flamingo body 6 stitches over from the bottom of the neck. CH 18, DC in 4th CH from the hook, SLST in each CH back to the beginning. SLST into the same space where you attached your light pink yarn. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Bent Leg: With light pink yarn, attach to the next stitch (the stitch right behind the straight leg. It should be 7 stitches from the bottom of the flamingo neck. CH 24, DC in 4th CH from the hook, SLST in the next 11 stitches, 2 SC in the next chain, SLST in each remaining CH. SLST into the same space where you attached your pink yarn for the bent leg. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tails.

Adding the white on the beak and the black eye:

This was simple, I found some scrap white yarn and threaded it on my needle. I came in from the back of the flamingo head at the widest part (top) of the beak and then inserted my needle into the bottom stitch of the beak. I did this 2 times to make sure that the white yarn was nice and secure. I then took my white yarn and wove through the stitches on the back over to the beginning tail and tied them in a knot and wove in my yarn tails. When I did the eye I just used a basic embroidery stitch to create that and then tucked in my yarn tails.

That’s it! You just made this fun Flamingo Appliqué that can be attached to pretty much anything. I hope you all enjoy making this as much as I did. It really does add that touch of Summer that I am missing right now. If you are in a colder area, I have a fun project for you. These Crochet Dog Booties will protect your fur babies feet from the snow and ice.

I love you all so very much and I will see you in my next Blog Post!

Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern: Easy Tutorial for Small Pets

Hi Everyone! It’s officially National Crochet Month so I thought I’d do a blog post if for this really adorable Crochet Dog Sweater. It’s the perfect size for a small dog around 10-15 pounds. This Crochet Dog Sweater can be made for a cat too! I actually made this Crochet Sweater for a girlfriend of mine. She has a hairless cat named Falkor! Since we live in Montana and Falkor has no hair, I though I’d make him this really cute Crochet Cat Sweater.

If you are the type that likes to follow along with a video tutorial you can check out my YouTube tutorial for this Crochet Dog Sweater or Cat Sweater down below. Also, don’t forget to check out the discount code for Furls FiberArts in honor of National Crochet Month. Furls has amazing crochet supplies, I really love this company and their crochet supplies. The highlighted discount code above is good for the entire month of March. So don’t wait or you’ll miss out on your opportunity to fall in love with their products just like I did.

I’m pretty sure our cat, Kola, says it all in this picture. To say the least she was not impressed with having to wear this Crochet Dog Sweater. I’ve included a few links of some of my most favorite things to use when crocheting projects for you guys.

Here’s what you will need for this Crochet Dog Sweater

Yarn: I recommend using red heart super saver in the color purple tones (only because they seem to no longer be making the blue tones) for this Crochet Dog Sweater. You will need 2 skeins of this yarn. You can find this wonderful yarn in the highlighted link above.

Crochet Hook: 5 mm Crochet Hook is going to be needed for this Crochet Dog Sweater. Lately I am obsessed with the crochet hooks that have the silicone handles. You can find these highly recommended crochet hooks in the highlighted link above.

Craft Scissors: Any pair of scissors that you have on hand will work. I really like the smaller 4″ craft scissors. They easily fit into my crochet bag so I always have them on hand. You can purchase a pair of craft scissors in the highlighted link above.

Yarn Needle: You will also need a yarn needle for weaving in your yarn tails at the very end. I really like these metal yarn needles. I feel like they weave through the yarn much easier than plastic yarn needles. You can purchase a set in the highlighted link above.

Abbreviations: CH (chain), SLST (slip stitch), SC (single crochet), DC (double crochet), FPDC (front post double crochet), BPDC (back post double crochet).

Special Stitches: FPDC, to make your front post double crochet, yarn over your crochet hook and insert the hook behind the post of the next stitch. Entering in from the front and coming out the next stitch from the back. Your crochet stitch should be laying over the top of your crochet hook. Now, yarn over and draw up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 loops again to finish off your double crochet. BPDC, to make a back post double crochet, yarn over and insert your crochet hook into the space between the stitch you are working on and the next stitch. Place your hook over the top of the crochet stitch in the next stitch, inserting your crochet hook into the next open spaces. Your crochet hook should be sitting over the top of your crochet stitch. Yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through 2 more loops to finish off your double crochet.

Pattern: Written in US terms.

Pattern Difficulty: Easy

Note: Chain 2 at the beginning does not count as a stitch. Chain 3 at the beginning does count as a stitch.

Now place 1 DC in the top of the next stitch. Alternate *FPDC, DC* all the way around. SLST to the top of the first DC (your chain 3 at the beginning). Note: Make sure you pay close attention and don’t place the DC in the same stitch as the FPDC. If you do, this will cause an increase in the round.
